Why Attend

In the US, prescribers are faced with a blend of state laws regulating cannabis, with 29 states permitting “medical marijuana” 17 permitting cannabidiol only, and nine permitting “recreational”. Products available to patients range from FDA approved synthetic cannabinoids such as dronabinol, to non-FDA approved preparations ranging from extracts to crude plant products. Health care providers are further confused by public demand for medical and recreational marijuana, and a perception that cannabinoids have been proven safe and effective in the treatment of numerous conditions. This creates numerous challenges for both prescribers, pharmacists and patients, especially as the FDA acts to approve compounds and the DEA struggles to classify preparations newly approved by the FDA. Health care providers need education that encompasses both health effects of recreational and the evidence-based use of emerging compounds that includes discussion of efficacy, pharmacokinetics and adverse effects.
