Dr. Joseph Balthasar, Direcctor, Center for Protein Therapeutics

The Center for Protein Therapeutics (CPT) works with leading pharmaceutical companies to advance the development of next-generation protein drugs, providing improved effectiveness and convenience for users.

Protein-based drugs, such as insulin, can treat a wide variety of conditions with remarkable effectiveness. In fact, a significant number of drugs approved by the FDA in the next decade are projected to be based on protein therapeutics. But current limitations often make correct formulation and administration of such drugs difficult.

A facility within UB’s New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics & Life Sciences (CBLS), the CPT conducts leading-edge research and provides structured training programs in concert with other centers at the CBLS.

Primary areas of research

  • Investigation of determinants of protein pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics
  • Development of improved bioanalytical methods for quantification of proteins in biological samples
  • Development of improved methods for bioproduct engineering and formulation
