Program Overview

Opioid abuse is currently an epidemic in both New York State and the United States as a whole.  Mortality from opioid-related overdoses is also increasing. Expanding access to naloxone for use in opioid-related overdoses is one method meant to decrease mortality from these overdoses.  Pharmacists can now dispense naloxone using a non-patient specific prescription (standing order).  This continuing education program will provide the training needed for pharmacists to comply with the standing orders for dispensing naloxone issued by Harm Reduction Coalition and those issued by the Erie County Department of Health.

Program Goal

To provide training needed for pharmacists to comply with the standing orders for dispensing naloxone issued by Harm Reduction Coalition and those issued by the Erie County Department of Health.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the incidence of opioid-related mortality in both the United States and New York State
  • Discuss the role of naloxone as part of an overall strategy to address opioid overdoses
  • List the available naloxone products and how each is administered
  • Provide an overview of the pharmacist’s role in dispensing naloxone via a non-patient specific prescription

Program Components

This program contains a participant survey, pre-test, naloxone education presentation, post-test, and program evaluation.

This educational offering is ACPE accredited as a knowledge-based enduring activity for 1.5 contact hours of CE credit.
