Why Attend

Pharmacists in all practice settings need a working knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations that govern medication in NYS.  As the scope of practice changes, newer regulations govern the practice in different ways; pharmacists must then assimilate the newer information into existing regulations and practices.  This lecture will be a comprehensive review of practice laws governing pharmacists and pharmacies in NYS and will include newer information on federal and state laws, rules and regulations.  Pharmacists who attend this lecture will be able to review existing regulations and incorporate the new parameters into their individual practice sites.

Objectives

Day 1, May 25th, General Regulations
1. Describe current legislative issues affecting the pharmacy profession in NYS
2. Define the current scopes of practice for the prescribing professionals in NYS
3. List the information requirements for written, e-prescribed, verbal prescriptions and medical orders that contain noncontrolled drugs, syringes and needles
4. Identify the Federal and State requirements concerning patient counseling and patient information materials
5. Describe the current regulations involving the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, the HIPAA HITECH Act and the pharmacists’ responsibilities
6. Identify the role of the supervising pharmacist and list the responsibilities involve
7. Define the licensing and registration requirements of the pharmacist, pharmacy interns and proposed technician certification
8. Review the pharmacist responsibilities under the current immunization regulations and collaborative drug therapy management

Day 2, May 26th, General Regulations Cont'd.

1. Discuss the consultant pharmacist roles in nursing home vending and consultation
2. Discuss the current regulations concerning the prepackaging, the commingling, the return and disposal of medications
3. Explain the current changes in regulations in pharmacy health care facilities
4. Discuss the current regulations in dispensing needles and syringes in NYS
5.  List the new requirements in the Affordable Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act
6. Explain the pharmacists’ responsibility under the new Drug Quality and Security Act
7. Identify the public safety laws that affect pharmacy practice including the Poison Prevention Packaging Act, the Anti‐Tampering Act and regulations for self‐defense sprays
8. Discuss the current regulations concerning the use of noncontrolled and controlled substances in emergency boxes in an institutional setting
9. Discuss the current regulations concerning the use of noncontrolled and controlled substances in emergency boxes in an institutional setting

Day 3, May 27th, Controlled Substances
1. List the information requirements for written, e-prescribed, verbal prescriptions and medical orders that contain controlled medications
2. List the various schedules of controlled substances, the medications in each schedule and the impact of these schedules as they apply to community and institutional practice
3. Discuss the prevalence of drug abuse and regulations involving pharmacy practice
4. Define the requirements necessary under the Federal Controlled Substance Act for e-prescribing of controlled substances
5. List the requirements that the NYS Bureau of Controlled Substances requires for the e-prescribing of controlled substances and the use of the Prescription Monitoring Program
6. Identify the ordering, inventory control procedures, transfer, security, and storage of controlled substances
7. Explain the current regulations for controlled substance in pharmacy and their effect on pharmacy practice in institutions
8. Define the pharmacists’ responsibility for compliance with the federal and state regulations concerning proper drug disposal of controlled substances
9. Cite the current regulations concerning the dispensing of medical marihuana in NYS

Cancellation Policy

We reserve the right to cancel this program due to such factors as insufficient registration. Registrants will be notified in this case. Requests for refunds, minus a $20 service charge, must be in writing and will be honored up to one week prior to the program. After that time, no refunds will be made.
