William J. Jusko, PhD, SUNY Distinguished Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, is the 2018 recipient of the Oscar B. Hunter Career Award in Therapeutics from the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics.
The American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (ASCPT) is the leading forum for the discussion, development, and integration of clinical pharmacology, translational medicine, and therapeutics. The Oscar B. Hunter Award was established in 1955 to recognize scientists with eminent careers in pharmaceutical research, patient care or education.
Jusko is director of the University at Buffalo Center of Excellence in Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics. From 2001 to 2016, he was chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. More than 100 students and fellows have completed postdoctoral training under his leadership.
Internationally known for his research on pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, Jusko has developed drug disposition, pharmacological effects and disease progression models to seek optimized dosing for corticosteroids, anti-diabetics and cancer treatments.
Jusko has won several awards from ASCPT, including the Rawls–Palmer Progress in Medicine Award, Sheiner–Beal Pharmacometrics Award, and William B. Abrams Lecture Award. From 2005 to 2015, he was a National Institutes of Health (NIH) MERIT awardee. In 2015, Jusko received an honorary doctorate from the Paris Descartes University. That same year, he was elected into the Kosciuszko Foundation’s Collegium of Eminent Scientists. He is a recipient of the American College of Clinical Pharmacology’s Distinguished Investigator Award and the International Society of Pharmacometrics’ (ISoP) Leadership Award, and is also an ISoP Fellow.
In addition to writing more than 600 published papers, Jusko serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics and has been an editorial board member for other journals, including: CPT: Pharmacometrics & Systems Pharmacology, the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, and the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. He has worked as a consultant for the Council for International Exchange of Scholars, the NIH Pharmacology Study Section, the Food and Drug Administration’s Clinical Pharmacology Advisory Committee, and several pharmaceutical companies.
“I am tremendously honored to be designated as the 2018 Oscar B. Hunter Award recipient,” said Jusko. “Receiving this most prestigious award in the field of clinical pharmacology will be the highlight of my career.”
