Graduate student employees may be eligible for leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) in accordance with federal and New York State law.
- Eligibility typically requires at least 12 months of service and a minimum number of hours worked in the previous year.
- FMLA leave may be requested for qualifying reasons such as:
- birth or adoption of a child, care for a seriously ill family member, a personal serious health condition
- Eligible students may receive up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave in a 12-month period.
- Leave must be requested in advance and approved by the supervising faculty advisor and the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS).
- Documentation will be required (e.g., medical certification or legal paperwork).
Graduate assistants should consult with the Department, Graduate School, and Human Resources to determine FMLA eligibility and to complete the necessary forms.
