Yeh-Hsing “Sima” Lao, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University at Buffalo (UB) School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, has been named to the Early Career Board (ECB) of Nano Letters, a leading journal of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and one of the most prestigious publications in the nanoscience and nanotechnology fields.
Recognition highlights leadership and expertise in nanoscience research
The board, established in 2015, provides a platform for early career scientists to share their experiences and perspectives on scientific publishing while offering insights into emerging disciplines. Members also collaborate on initiatives such as organizing virtual issues and advising on trends that will shape the future of the field.
This year, more than 600 scientists from around the globe applied for the ECB. Only 55 members were selected. Lao will serve as co-chair of the Americas regional group for the 2025-26 term alongside Laura Wang of the University of Nebraska.
“Being selected for the Early Career Board is a tremendous honor and an exciting opportunity to contribute to the advancement of nanoscience,” Lao said. “I look forward to collaborating with colleagues from around the world to help shape the journal’s direction and support the next generation of researchers.”
Lao, who joined UB in 2022, specializes in biomedical engineering, drug and gene delivery and nanotechnology. His lab focuses on advancing CRISPR gene editing technologies, developing approaches to improve drug and gene delivery and designing physiologically relevant models to study pharmacokinetics and disease interactions.
Donald E. Mager, PharmD, PhD, professor and chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, praised Lao’s achievement.
"This recognition reflects the quality, innovation and impact of Sima’s work,” Mager said. “His innovative work in drug and gene delivery and his commitment to advancing biomedical engineering are helping to position UB as a global leader in pharmaceutical sciences research."
For over 135 years, the University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences has continually been a leader in the education of pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists, renowned for innovation in clinical practice and research.
