Target Audience

This educational activity is designed to prepare new Doctor of Pharmacy graduates to sit for the NYS MPJE (law exam).  There is no continuing education credit associated with this activity.

Objectives

  1. Describe the licensure and registration process for pharmacists and non-pharmacists in New York State and review the scope of duties for all pharmacy personnel.

  2. Review requirements for issuing controlled and non-controlled prescriptions in New York State, including prescribers authorized to issue prescriptions and pharmacists' responsibilities in dispensing prescriptions.

  3. Review pharmacists’ scope of practice and duties in patient care, which include administering drug products, counseling patients, documenting care activities, and providing collaborative drug therapy management.

  4. Identify laws, rules, and regulations that govern all steps in the medication dispensing process, such as performing prospective drug utilization review, labeling drug products, and packaging sterile, non-sterile, and hazardous drugs.

  5. List record-keeping requirements in New York State and requirements for registration and licensure of a practice facility.
