For the fourth year in a row, the University at Buffalo chapter of the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) won the Region 1 Operation Heart Award at the Midyear Regional Meeting.
Out of the 18 schools in Region 1, the 2019-2020 award was presented to the UB School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences for outstanding development and implementation of Operation Heart, a patient care project that increases awareness of cardiovascular disease through screening and educational activities, leading to improvements in the health of our nation.
“UB's chapter is well known for implementing new innovative events each year, in addition to our annual community outreach wellness clinics,” says Olivia Denny, PharmD ’22, APhA-ASP Operation Heart Committee Leader.
During the 2019-2020 school year, Operation Heart educated and screened approximately 600 patients in the Buffalo area, including many virtual consultations during the COVID-19 pandemic. The initiatives focused on promoting healthy blood pressure, cholesterol, and body mass index levels, stroke and heart attack prevention, smoking cessation, stress relief, exercise, and heart-healthy eating.
“We hope to encourage others to take action in their own lives and to motivate others by addressing the impact and prevalence of heart disease,” Denny says.
