SPPS Operation Heart initiative earns national recognition at APhA annual meeting

The University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (SPPS) received second runner-up for the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) 2015-2016 Operation Heart award at the APhA Annual Meeting and Exposition in San Francisco, CA.

The SPPS 2015-2016 Operation Heart initiative was chaired by Laura Bielecki, ’17, and Francine Yung, ’17. SPPS was one of over 130 chapters up for the award, which is given for outstanding development and implementation of Operation Heart, a patient care project that increases awareness of cardiovascular disease through screening and educational activities, leading to improvements in the health of our nation.

In addition to the recognition SPPS received for Operation Heart, Kristen Russo, ’17, represented UB in the counseling competition and Lauren Nigrelli, ’17, presented a poster.

The APhA Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) is a division of the American Pharmaceutical Association. Its purpose is to foster the professional development of students. This organization sponsors a number of programs including the Poison Prevention Program aimed at pre-school and early grade school children, the Drug Abuse Awareness Program for grade school and high school students, and a hypertension screening program.

The University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is a leader in the education of pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists, renowned for innovation in clinical practice and research. The school is accredited by the American Council of Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE) and ranked as one of the top 25 schools of pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences in the United States.
