Many of Dr. Thomas Bardos’ students and colleagues knew him as a beloved professor at the UB School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, an enthusiastic and encouraging teacher whose influence on could not be overstated.

A special thank you to Dr. Joseph Dunn, ’81, and Dr. Maria Bardos for leading this effort, and thank you to the many generous donors who helped make this legacy scholarship become a reality!

To the rest of the world, he was known as a renowned chemist and chemotherapy researcher whose significant contributions over more than 50 years earned him several prestigious awards and recognition from the American Chemical Society, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and the Royal Society of Chemistry of Great Britain.

But not everyone knew of Dr. Bardos’ generosity.

In addition to all that he did for his students, he established scholarships at more than one university, including the annual Dr. Daniel H. Murray Memorial Professional Development Award at the University at Buffalo. Bardos established the award in honor of Dr. Murray, who served twice as pharmacy dean, from 1954-69 and 1976-84, before becoming vice chancellor of the State University of New York system. Bardos endowed the fund through a bequest, promising his own money to ensure that more PharmD students would pursue research careers.

Following in the generous footsteps of Dr. Bardos, alumni, friends and colleagues have collectively donated over $50,000 to create the Dr. Thomas J. Bardos Scholarship. The award will be given annually to a deserving student in either the Doctor of Pharmacy or one of the Pharmaceutical Sciences programs. In the spirit of Dr. Bardos’ memory, the student will be selected based on their interest and accomplishments in the field of research, with a preference to students focused on chemotherapy research.

The Dr. Thomas J. Bardos Scholarship Fund is still accepting gifts—the more the fund grows, the more assistance the scholarship will be able to provide to students. To make a gift, visit or call 716-645-3432.
