Drug Utilization Review

The State University of New York (SUNY) began a partnership with the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) Drug Utilization Review (DUR) Program in 2008. The goal of the partnership is to provide evidence-based, non-commercial clinical reviews coupled with academic analysis of drug utilization to improve safe and cost-effective use of medications in the NY Medicaid population.

A team of cHOPE clinical pharmacists and data analysts at University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (UB SPPS) conducts DUR reviews with analytic support from information technology experts at Stony Brook University (SBU).

The activities of the c-HOPE SUNY partners in support of the DUR program include the following:

  • UB SPPS
    • Clinical review of selected drugs and drug classes
    • Analysis of Medicaid claims
    • Quarterly presentations to the NYSDOH DUR Board
  • SBU
    • Management of eMedNY data warehouse
    • Collaboration with analysts at UB
