The only pharmacy school-based program of its kind in the country, the MS in Clinical and Translational Therapeutics offers PharmD, undergraduate and health care professional students a unique opportunity to be involved in research and training to combat disease.

Meeting a critical need

Clinical and translational therapeutics is an area of research that helps bridge scientific discoveries with the treatment of disease. There is a significant need for pharmacy and health care professional students to gain this advanced training. This has been recognized by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which notes a critical decline of clinical scientists with training in both patient care and research.

This new MS degree program will help develop a pipeline of research leaders focused on therapeutic individualization and optimization of patient care.

The completion of this MS, combined with the PharmD or other health professional degree, will give graduates a remarkable advantage when applying for residencies, fellowships or employment in clinical pharmacy or industry.

"There are currently no pharmacy school-based programs in the U.S. in the clinical and translational sciences that are specifically focused on treatment," says program director and associate dean for clinical and translational sciences Brian Tsuji, PharmD. "This makes our program highly innovative as it blends the clinical sciences with research rigor and therapeutic application.”

Tailor-made experience

The program offers five therapeutic areas of concentration for students to choose from: clinical trials, pharmacotherapy, translational pharmacology, experimental therapeutics and pharmaceutical outcomes. These tracks combine rotations with a pragmatic focus on research to create a highly individualized experience.

"UB has world-leading graduate training programs in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in the pharmaceutical sciences and an extremely innovative PharmD curriculum," Tsuji says. "Our MS in Clinical and Translational Therapeutics truly stands on the shoulders of giants."

For over 130 years, the University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences has continually been a leader in the education of pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists, renowned for innovation in clinical practice and research. The school is accredited by the American Council of Pharmaceutical Education and is the No. 1 ranked school of pharmacy in New York State and No. 14 in the United States by U.S. News & World Report.
