Why Attend

Pharmacists in all practice settings need a working knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations that govern medication in NYS.  As the scope of practice changes, newer regulations govern the practice in different ways; pharmacists must then assimilate the newer information into existing regulations and practices.  This lecture will be a comprehensive review of practice laws governing pharmacists and pharmacies in NYS and will include newer information on federal and state laws, rules and regulations.  Pharmacists who attend this lecture will be able to review existing regulations and incorporate the new parameters into their individual practice sites.

Objectives

1.  Describe current legislative issues affecting the pharmacy profession in NYS

2.  Explain the current scopes of practice for the prescribing professionals in NYS

3.  Discuss the current scope of practice for pharmacists

4.  List the information requirements for written, e-prescribed, verbal prescriptions and medical orders that contain noncontrolled drugs, syringes and needles

5.  Identify the Federal and State requirements concerning patient counseling and patient information materials

6.  Describe the current regulations involving the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, the HIPAA HITECH Act and the pharmacists’ responsibilities

7.  Identify the role of the supervising pharmacist and cite the responsibilities involved
