Our innovative curriculum allows students to take what they have learned in our classrooms, labs and simulated environments and apply this cutting edge knowledge to real-world settings.
With over 1,100 preceptors across 650+ training sites, we offer a diverse and progressive experiential training program, with the second and third years preparing each student for their final fourth year of full-time, advanced pharmacy practice experiences. The program includes both Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPEs) and Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs) for PharmD students.
Training opportunities are expansive and span a variety of clinical, community, regulatory and research options locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.
In Buffalo, we are very fortunate to have comprehensive health systems centers as well as renowned specialty health care and research programs:
- Kaleida Health
The largest non-profit health care provider in Western New York and supplies the areas eight counties throughout four different hospitals and and separate medical centers, including the Buffalo General Medical Center, a 457-bed acute care medical center located on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. It is the primary teaching affiliate for the University at Buffalo.
- DENT Neurological Institute
This center is the largest out-patient neurology practice in the United States, with over 70 providers among 16 sub-specialty clinics,. Ambulatory clinical and research activities are available.
- Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center
Ranked by US News and World Report as one of the Top 3% of cancer hospitals nationwide, inpatient and outpatient clinical oncology rotations and along with many research opportunities are available.
- Buffalo Psychiatric Center
Dynamic training site which provides inpatient, outpatient, residential, vocational and wellness services to adults with serious mental illnesses. Clinical rotations addressing a variety of psycho-social issues are available.
- VA Western New York Healthcare System
Inpatient and outpatient clinical rotations along with specialty experiences in nuclear medicine, infectious disease, and anticoagulation.
- Research and Scholarship
As one of the top research institutions in the country, we have pre-eminent research faculty in both the departments of pharmacy practice and pharmaceutical sciences allowing, our students to engage in high level research. Opportunities are available in both clinical and bench science platforms, allowing students an early opportunity to assess their research interests under superior faculty mentoring.
- Niagara Hospice
The only hospice in Western New York accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Health Care and the only hospice to have its own ambulette. Elective rotations specializing in geriatrics and palliative care are available.
- Buffalo Medical Group
Is one of the oldest and largest physician-directed group practices in New York State. Outpatient clinical rotations integrate our students with faculty, and residents with medical practitioners, for advanced patient care and research focusing on many areas of wellness and disease state management.
