Opioid Prescriber Training Program

Effective July 22, 2016, Public Health Law Article 33 §3309-a was updated to require prescribers with a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) number and medical residents prescribing under a facility DEA number to complete a minimum of three (3) hours of course work or training in pain management, palliative care and addiction. This Opioid Prescriber Training Program for prescribers was developed to meet this need, providing education on all of the topics included in the mandate.

The New York State Department of Health, recognizing the opioid education being provided to prescribers through the UB School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences Medicaid Prescriber Education Program, partnered with UB SPPS cHOPE and the Continuing Education office to create an enduring online program to meet the New York State mandate.

The Opioid Prescriber Training Program, designed as an online enduring activity, consists of two parts, covering all eight mandated topics.  It was launched March 1, 2017.  Medical, dental and pharmacy accreditation was provided to over 37,000 prescribers by the initial mandated completion date of July 1, 2017.

The program has been renewed for the 2018 term and the updated Opioid Prescriber Training program activity continues as an available offering.
