Current research focuses on the molecular biology, physiology, and pharmacology of cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase (PDE) enzymes in the brain.  This multi-gene enzyme family regulates cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP signaling and is thought to have considerable potential for the discovery and development of drugs, including those for treating neuropsychiatric disorders.  We study the role of PDEs in normal neuronal signaling and behavior and under conditions that model neuropsychiatric illnesses such as depression, anxiety, and dementia. Specific projects involve target validation and drug discovery efforts for the PDE2 and PDE4 enzyme families.  This work involves active collaborations in the areas of computational modeling and medicinal chemistry at academic and biotech laboratories.
