Half Way Charity Gala Raises Funds to Support Kids Escaping DrugsThe Class of 2014, led by officers Kayla Maxwell, Gina Sutedja and Nick Hopwood, organized the annual Charity Halfway Gala in February. The event was very successful, raising over $8000 for WNY’s very own Kids Escaping Drugs Campaign (KED).
Ronn Tritto, the Executive Director of the Alcohol and Drug Dependency Services Foundation attended the event and accepted the checks on behalf of KED. An alumnus from the KED program also came to speak at the event and provided a firsthand account on how KED helped change his life. Independent Health’s representative and a UB alumnus, Dr. Keith Rowe ‘10 was also in attendance and presented a check to KED from another KED fundraiser event held by Independent Health. |

Goal - To provide a comprehensive review for graduating pharmacy students in preparation for the June 2012 New York State Board of Pharmacy Examination. Areas to be covered include preparation for the Part III Practical Examination (compounding prescriptions and sterile products), and preparation for the Part Three Written Examination.
Program Description -The program consists of four separate sessions, and includes lecture and laboratory components. Individuals may register for all sessions, or only those sessions in which they are interested in.

Javier Blanco Investigates Possible Cancer Drug Toxicity to Genetic FactorsDr. Javier Blanco, associate professor, pharmaceutical sciences, is investigating whether anthracyclines, cancer fighting drugs used to treat childhood cancers, may actually cause pediatric patients to develop cardiomyopathy and other cardiac problems later in life.
Dr. Blanco sees his work as a bridge between research and clinical practice and hopes to answer underlying genetic questions involved with individualizing drug treatment - how an individual is genetically coded to respond to a drug once it enters the body and then how to adjust dosage based on this information.

P4 Student, Meghan Rowcliffe, Publishes AbstractCongratulations to P4 Student Meghan Rowcliffe and her research mentor, Dr. Fran Gengo, Associate Professor, Pharmacy Practice on the acceptance of their abstract Pharmacokinetic Postmortem Evaluation Reveals Death from Carbamazepine to be Accidental Rather than Criminal to the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS). P4 Student Receives Research Travel Award to AmsterdamCongratulations to P4 student, Kerri O’Connor for her receipt of a travel award from the European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis to attend the 5th Joint Triennial Congress of the European and American Committee for the Treatment of Multiple Sclerosis in Amsterdam. Her research presentation was titled Patterns of dietary and herbal supplement use by multiple sclerosis patients was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Murali Ramanathan, Associate professor, Pharmaceutical Sciences. It has also been published as a research paper in O'Connor K, Weinstock-Guttman B, Carl E, Kilanowski C, Zivadinov R, Ramanathan M., Journal of Neurology. 2011 Sep 6. |
Stefanie Wiegand, PharmD/JD Student Receives AACP MedCo $10,000 ScholarshipCongratulations to Stefanie Wiegand, one of four dual degree students nationally, who was chosen as a MedCo Scholar by the Medco Foundation. Stefanie will receive a $10,000 scholarship as part of the new MedCo Scholars Program administered by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.

ACCP Clinical Pharmacy Challenge: UB Team Places in the Top 50% American College of Clinical Pharmacy held its annual Clinical Pharmacology competition. In the 2011 competition, 84 teams of three students competed against teams from other schools in a ‘quiz bowl’ format. Preliminary rounds were conducted ‘virtually’ at the local level and these rounds keep teams advancing through to the quarterfinal, semifinal and final rounds. Our UB team, consisting of P4 Students: Nicholas Bacon, Curtis Johnson and Aleksey Ushkin, made it to Round Three of the ‘virtual’ local competition, placing us in the top 50%. Congratulations!

APhA-ASP Counseling Competition Announces First Round WinnersCongratulations to the following top ten winners of the first round of the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists Counseling Competition:

Excellence in the Pharmaceutical Sciences Award ProgramThe Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences annually recognizes PharmD students who excel within the pharmaceutical sciences focused courses in the 2010-2011 academic year. Ninety three P1, P2 and P3 students were recognized for their achievements in these courses. Drs. Ramanathan, Straubinger, Mager and Blanco presented certificates of achievement to these students.
