Pharmaceutical Sciences Graduate Program Admissions

At UB SoPPS, graduate students in the Pharmaceutical Sciences programs can witness their research translate from the bench to the bedside. Graduates with an MS or PhD degree in pharmaceutical sciences can become pharmacogeneticists, bioanalysts, clinical researchers and more.

Admissions Requirements

Below is a list of requirements for the BS/MS, MS, and PhD programs:

  • A minimum GPA of a 3.0. Special attention is placed on the grades achieved in basic science courses relevant to our program (chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology and mathematics).
  • Demonstrated proficiency in fundamental scientific areas including organic and physical chemistry, biochemistry, biology, and mathematics.
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test
  • Prior research experience and co-authorship in scientific publications are considered favorably in the admission process.
  • Two letters of recommendation from faculty knowledgeable of the student's ability and capability are extremely important. In these letters, we seek information about the student's experience in laboratory research, ability to communicate, creativity of the individual, and intangibles in the student's academic performance.
  • Important Notes for Pharmaceutical Sciences International Applicants

In addition to the requirements above, students who are applying to the BS/MS must first be accepted into the BS program and complete the junior year. Students who are applying to the MS or PhD must have a Bachelor's degree or higher in pharmacy, biochemistry, chemistry, biology, engineering or other science.

gradAdmissions Selection

Admission is awarded on a competitive basis to qualified applicants. Fall admission only. Students must be first admitted by the department before a faculty advisor is chosen. Thus, an applicant must seek admission from the Department, even though s/he may have preference regarding joining a particular laboratory.

Selection is based on scholastic achievement, aptitude, personal qualifications, and evidence of motivation toward pharmaceutical sciences. These are judged from the college record, grade point average, the GRE, and letters of reference. In addition to intellectual and academic competence, the School's Admissions Committee considers communication skills, leadership ability, community service, research experience, and motivation for pursuing a career in pharmaceutical sciences.
