Welcome to the May SoPPS Dean's e-Notes.

In this edition of e-Notes, we mark our 2010 commencement, note several end-of-semester activities and recognize the accomplishments of alumni, faculty, students and friends. The school is enriched by input and guidance from all those sectors of the SoPPS community. We welcome this opportunity to showcase their many contributions and thank them for their support.

School News
2010 Commencement

The SoPPS celebrated the accomplishments of 127 students graduating from the PharmD program and pharmaceutical sciences undergraduate and graduate programs during its commencement ceremonies on May 8. New York State Assemblyman Jim Hayes delivered the commencement address. Peter Brody, experiential program director, was recognized as SoPPS Teacher of the Year.

We wish our graduates all the best for their future success and look forward to working with them as our alumni colleagues.

Residency presentations

During the Sixth Annual Resident Project Presentation Day held on April 16, 22 residents from SoPPS programs, as well as from other local programs, Kaleida Health, University of Rochester Medical Center, SUNY Upstate Medical University, Roswell Park Cancer Institute and the Western New York VA Medical Center made platform presentations. The presentations were reviewed and critiqued in preparation for the Eastern States Conference for Pharmacy Residents and Preceptors.

Platform winners were:

First place: Shelley Wilson, PharmD, homecare/hospice resident, University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences/Niagara Hospice.

Second place: Ashley Whieldon, PharmD, pharmacy practice resident, SUNY Upstate Medical University.

The UB SoPPS Residency Program extends its thanks to the affiliated residency programs, evaluators, faculty, moderators, residents and students who participated.

 
Alumni Notes
2010 Alumni Reunion Planning

2010 SoPPS Annual Alumni Reunion activities are being held on Friday, Sept. 24 and Saturday, Sept. 25. Friday events include private class dinners and Saturday events include an afternoon riverboat cruise and evening gala dinner dance at the Embassy Suites in the new Avant Building in downtown Buffalo.

Planning committees for our special recognition class years of 1955, 1960, 1985 and 2000 are being formed. Committee members will work with the school to plan and organize programs and events of specific interest to you and your classmates. The SoPPS needs the assistance of all our recent alumni (classes of 2005-09) with the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy 'Alumni Curriculum Quality' survey. All recent SoPPS graduates will be receiving an e-mail from the AACP asking for assistance in completing a brief survey designed to evaluate your experience in your professional degree program and to provide feedback to AACP and the SoPPS to help improve and strengthen our educational processes. Michael Apostolakos, '83, received a Rochester Business Journal 2010 Health Care Achievement Award in Innovation.

John Rodgers, '83 received the 2010 Service to Mankind Award from the Western and Central New York Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Faculty/Staff Notes
Schentag receives entrepreneur award

Jerome Schentag has been named the recipient of the 2010 UB Faculty Entrepreneur Award. The award honors faculty members who transform an idea, invention or discovery into a product or service that improves quality of life and benefits the local region's economy. Schentag was recognized for developing the SmartPill and for his activities with the startup company TheraSyn Sensors.

Schentag will receive the award at the UB Partners Day luncheon program on June 9 in the Adams Mark hotel in Buffalo. The SoPPS congratulates him on this prestigious honor!

American Society of Clinical Oncology to feature Blanco research

Javier Blanco's research study, "Anthracycline-related cardiomyopathy in childhood cancer survivors and association with polymorphisms in the carbonyl reductase genes: A Children's Oncology Group study," has been chosen by ASCO for presentation at its 46th annual meeting. It also will be highlighted in ASCO's official press program. An abstract of Javier's research will be available on ASCO's website as well as via a presscast and news briefing (see link for presscast). Only 1 percent of ASCO annual meeting abstracts are chosen for this distinction. Learn more.

Presentations

Alice Ceacareanu presented "Diabetes pharmacotherapy: a potential modifier of breast cancer prognosis?" at the 101st Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research. SoPPS students David Yeow, Dong Liu, Hsin-Wei Fu, Sarah Wrightman, Anand Shah and Patricia Ng contributed to the presentation.

William Jusko presented "Systems Pharmacology of Anti-Inflammatory effects of Corticosteroids" at Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

William Prescott presented "Leadership, Pharmacy and You," at the ASHP Leadership Speakers Bureau, Wegmans College of Pharmacy, St. John Fisher College.

Grants

Alice Ceacareanu (PI) and Alan Forrest (Co-I) have been awarded $300,000 for "Peter T. Rowley Breast Cancer Research Grant" by the New York State Department of Health.

Recognition

Alice Ceacareanu has been appointed to the board of directors of the New York State Council of Health-system Pharmacists Research and Education Foundation. Ceacareanu also was awarded the Clinical Pharmacy Services Research Award by the New York State Council of Health-system Pharmacists (NYSCHP) for the project "Evaluating the prognostic value of adiponectin levels in diabetics with breast cancer—Role of insulin sensitizers."

Alan Forrest received the Oncology One Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Alfred Reiman received the 2010 SoPPS SIGNA Yearbook dedication.

Marilyn Morris received the Faculty Service Award from the SoPPS Pharmacy Leadership Society, Beta Omicron Chapter.

Gene Morse has been appointed at-large laboratory director to serve on the executive committee of the AIDS Clinical Trials Group. Morse also was appointed to the steering committee of the New York State Research Centers Consortium.

Robert Wahler has been named section leader of the National Council of Hospice and Palliative Care Professionals. Wahler will sit on the NCHPP executive committee with responsibility for representing the hospice and palliative care pharmacy profession, and membership to the NCHPP and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO). Student Notes
Goldwater Scholarship nominee

Entering P1 student Kayla Maxwell, Class of 2014, was one of four University at Buffalo student nominees for the prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to sophomores and juniors who have outstanding potential and intend to pursue advanced degrees in mathematics, the natural sciences or engineering. Kayla is interested in pursuing a PharmD/PhD and is currently a summer research fellow at Roswell Park Cancer Institute and has a paper under review for publication. Congratulations Kayla!

Students raise funds for Haiti earthquake victims

Ali Mohamedali, Emily Chan and Michael Bui of the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists organized a Haiti Earthquake Benefit Luncheon to raise funds and collect clothing and personal care items for victims of the earthquake. At the April 8 event, earthquake refugees and the director of VIVE La Casa, a local refugee shelter, told guests about their experiences to raise awareness of the dire needs of those affected by the earthquake. Cash donations of $600 were collected for the shelter.

Halfway Dance
Halfway Dance Student Leaders: Danielle Joset, Elyse Jackson, Matthew Schnupp and Kristen Della Penna
Halfway dance

The 2010 Halfway Dance and Charity Gala was held in the Buffalo Hyatt Regency on March 20. The 2012 Class Officers Committee—Matthew Schnupp, Danielle Joset, Della Penna and Elyse Jackson—planned the event that raised $5,000 for the Children's Growth Foundation of Western New York. The committee recognized Joset for her extra efforts in planning and executing the event, which was complicated by having to reschedule and move the event after the unexpected closing of the Statler Towers.

AACP Wal-Mart scholars

Congratulations to student-faculty pairs: Samuel Aitken and Associate Dean Gayle Brazeau and David Jacobs and Clinical Assistant Professor Peter Brody for their selection as recipients of the 2010 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Wal-Mart Scholars Program. The goal of the scholarship program is to strengthen recipients' skills and commitment to a career in academic pharmacy through participation in programming and activities at the 2010 AACP annual meeting and seminars. Students and faculty members receive $1,000 travel scholarships to attend the meetings in July. See more.

Gertrude Chimhungwe presented the poster "Bioanalysis of Antiretrovirals in Breast Milk Samples from Re-lactation Protocols" at the first annual Center for AIDS Research Scientific Symposium, Developmental Center for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome Research. Gertrude is mentored by Gene Morse, associate director, Translational Pharmacology Core in UB's New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences. She also received support from the Perinatal HIV Research Unit, University of Cape Town, South Africa.

Katherine DiPalo has been accepted into the Veteran's Administration VALOR Program at the Buffalo Veterans Administration Medical Center. VALOR offers a paid internship and gives qualified students the opportunity to develop clinical practice competencies under the guidance of a preceptor.
