This competitive funding is given to counteract the financial pressure of student loans for clinical investigators by repaying a percentage of the researcher’s qualified educational debt in return for a commitment to engage in NIH-mission oriented research. Typically, these funds are awarded to MDs or PhDs—Jacobs’ ability to secure this funding is highly noteworthy. In 2016, out of the 171 non-MD/PhD proposals submitted, 81 proposals were awarded nationally.

Jacobs’ research proposal, entitled “Clinical Epidemiology in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease,” included three different projects focused on clinical epidemiology and health services research among COPD patients. This award allows Jacobs to build and sustain his research career in pharmacy and community health to promote health, prevent disease and advance public health policies.
