Fiebelkorn honored with SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service

Karl Fiebelkorn, BS ’78 & MBA '88, Senior Associate Dean for Student, Professional and Community Affairs, is the recipient of a 2019 SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service.

The award is given for consistently superior service sustained over a multiple-year period to the local campus, the State University of New York, the community, the discipline-related professional organizations, and/or to faculty governance.

“Service is a way of life for Professor Fiebelkorn,” says James M. O’Donnell, PhD, dean. “He has natural leadership abilities and profound dedication to our students, our alumni and our community.”

Fiebelkorn has been a full-time faculty member at the University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (UB SPPS) since 1995. He teaches several subject areas, including pharmacy law, pharmacy management and pharmacy administration.

He is responsible for overseeing all aspects of Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) student activities for over 450 students, including academic and personal support, leadership and professional development, and advising professional and fraternal organizations.

His academic and administrative scholarship is prolific, with more than 300 presentations at local, regional and national meetings, 44 publications in referred journals, 20 abstracts and two white papers.

Fiebelkorn has supported many strategic community initiatives, including the UB SPPS Poison Prevention Program, regional Drug Take Back Days, and combatting opioid and prescription drug abuse through distribution of more than 20,000 drug deactivation packets to various community and civic agencies.

He is a champion for the research and application of laws, rules and regulations affecting pharmacy practice in New York State, which led to recently-passed legislation increasing the scope of practice for pharmacists, students and interns to provide vaccinations throughout the state.

He has been the recipient of many awards including the 2008 UB SPPS Teacher of the Year Award, the 2008 National Community Pharmacists Association Faculty Excellence Award, the 2009 Pharmacists Society of the State of New York Faculty Excellence Award, the 2009 PAWNY Community Service Award, the 2009 Western New York Society of Health Systems Pharmacy Robert M. Cooper Award, the 2011 Pharmacists Society of the State of New York (PSSNY) Jack Nicolais Award, the 2013 PSSNY Distinguished Pharmacy Educator Award,  the 2014 American Pharmacists Association/PSSNY Bowl of Hygeia Award and the 2018 Generation Rx, Cardinal Health Champions Award.

Fiebelkorn will receive the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service this fall at the 16th annual University at Buffalo Celebration of Faculty and Staff Excellence.
