Experiential Education

UB SPPS Experiential Education includes both Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPEs) and Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs) for PharmD students. 

We offer an introductory program that is diverse and progressive in nature throughout all three years of the PharmD curriculum leading up and preparing each student for their final year of full-time, advanced pharmacy practice experiences. Our curriculum allows students the opportunity to apply what they have learned in the classroom and in the laboratory to real-world settings. We offer a variety of clinical specialties and research opportunities:

Local

In Buffalo, we are very fortunate to have comprehensive health systems centers as well as world renowned specialty health care and research programs:

  • Dent Neurological Institute
    Ambulatory clinical and research activities available specializing in neurology
  • Roswell Park Cancer Institute
    Inpatient and outpatient clinical rotations and research opportunities with preceptors specializing in cutting edge oncology care
  • Buffalo Psychiatric Center
    Dynamic training site covering involved clinical and pyscho-social issues
  • VA Medical Center of WNY
    Inpatient and outpatient clinical rotations along with specialty experiences in nuclear medicine, infectious disease, and anticoagulation
  • Research
    As one of the top research institutions in the country, we have pre-eminent research faculty in both the departments of pharmacy practice and pharmaceutical sciences allowing, our students to engage in high level research.  This begins in the P1 year with our research seminars, allowing students an early opportunity to assess their research interests under faculty guidance.
  • Niagara Hospice
    Inpatient and elective rotations that specialize in geriatrics and palliative care
  • Buffalo Medical Group
    Outpatient clinical rotations that integrate our students with faculty and residents, along with medical practitioners, for advanced patient care and research focusing on many areas of wellness and disease state management
